ECZEMA

What is Eczema

Eczema is the term given for a group of inflammatory skin diseases causing the skin to become dry and itchy, red skin rashes often appear and flaking of the skin is not uncommon. The word eczema actually means to “boil” and although the symptoms can look severe the condition is not contagious.

Small blisters can appear under the skin and in more severe cases the skin can become infected requiring the use of antibiotics for treatment.

Certain areas of the body are more prone to Eczema more than others and these are the arms, elbows, legs and knees .This is because these areas are not often protected by clothing.

Eczema ranges in its severity and there are several types, the more common types areatopic and allergic.

Eczema occurs in both children and adults, but usually appears during infancy and is not unusual in pregnant women.

Types of Eczema

Atopic which tends to be hereditary and is the most common form of eczema occurs mainly in infants and young children but may occur at any age.The symptoms, which range according to the individual usually have acute flares, are that of dry skin, thickening of the skin, red and sometimes weepy patches.

- Atopic eczema is usually associated with people that have other health problems such as asthma and hay fever (allergic rhinitis).

Allergic or contact eczema occurs when a person’s skin reacts to an allergen, causing a rash which at first only appears at the point of contact but often spreads to other skin areas far away from that point. Usual symptoms occur involving either a skin rash, blisters red inflammation, weeping skin patches.

- Allergens are typically metals in jewellery, such as nickel, perfumes, washing powders, plants hairdressing chemicals. Food types can also cause skin reactions and these are: Sugar, flour/ dough, citrus fruits, spices, herbs, seasonings (e.g. horseradish, mustard, and garlic), fish and seafood’s, meat and poultry.

- The difficulty with Allergic eczema is with its diagnosis, as once the allergen has been removed; particularly for any length of time it can appear like any other form of eczema.

Treatments:

There is no known “cure” for eczema but today there are a many treatments available to make the sufferers life more bearable.

Moisturising the skin can help with the dryness that eczema causes.
Avoid materials known to cause reaction- food types, Smokey environment etc.
Topical Steroids will lessen the severity of any eczema outburst. Most of these require prescription. Avoid if possible - Steroids are bad!
Avoid stress which is known to aggravate eczema
Sun protection is essential
Sudden changes in temperature
Oral anti-histamines
Antibiotics used to treat skin infections
